The Knee. November 27, 2018.

Kai suffered a knee injury in the middle of October.  He pivoted on it while practicing Jiu Jitsu and immediately knew something wasn’t right.  Des was quick to get an MRI which found the meniscal tear. It wasn’t small.  Luckily, there was a great choice for an orthopedic surgeon.  The doctor had operated on lots of knees and patients included at least one National Rugby player.  Kai had surgery on Halloween morning. The meniscus was repaired which is great,  but recovery will be long.  To give him the best outcome and a strong knee joint, Kai must avoid contact sports for 5 months!  He’s healing fast and was even able-bodied enough to take 5 national final exams 9 days after the surgery.  He thinks he did well on these NCEA tests as they are called.  It was a dramatic end of Year 11 but things are looking up now!

From Kai:

As my recovery after my meniscus repair surgery continues, the eminent reality of no basketball or running is starting to dawn on me. However, I choose to focus on what I CAN do rather than the things I CAN’T do. This has lead me to have a better attitude towards my activities or lack thereof. Everyday I hear and think about those who have endured much worse events or trauma in their own lives.

I have also received a callback for a part time job at the local YMCA. I need to present to them certain times I am able to work there assisting in the after school program there. However for this to happen I need to sort out my student VISA. We are currently waiting for a response or confirmation for me to be able to work here in New Zealand under my student VISA.

Among the YMCA job offer I believe I also scored a potential part time job at Torpedo 7 (similar to  REI ) in Bell Block.  I met with the manager Mike a few days ago and we proceeded to have a very brief and concise job interview; this was my first. I found it funny that Mike, Torpedo 7’s manager, also brought up that he has a rather extensive sneaker collection. I never would have guessed that this interest of mine would lead to a possible advantage in finding my first job!
